Conference Theme

Across the health care system, we depend on data to support many different activities—such as measuring performance, building business cases, developing policy and even sharing experiences and applying lessons that have been learned. Together, these activities form a chain, linking data with decision and knowledge. This year’s theme, “Linking the Health Information Chain,” explores these relationships.

Program Tracks

The program for Data Users 2008 will be comprised of two tracks, each reflecting a different set of data use activities.

Track 1: Tools and Methods for Analyzing Data

  • Focus on new frameworks and tools for answering questions relevant to performing analysis and informing research

  • Aimed at analysts and researchers who are responsible for interpreting, understanding and pulling information out of health data

Track 2: Applying Data in Planning and Decision-Making

  • Focus on how we turn health data into applied knowledge, such as through budgeting and resource management, building business cases and operational plans, shaping health policies or implementing strategies that work

  • Designed for today’s planners and decision- and policy-makers

Session Topics

Through each of the two tracks, Data Users 2008 will explore five key topic areas that are top-of-mind in our health system today:

  • Health Services—Addressing questions related to quality, patient safety and outcomes, as well as discussing access and variations in wait times

  • Costs and Funding—Examining research using economic data related to the health system and exploring costs of various services

  • Integration and Continuity of Care—Addressing questions related to how patients transition between the different kinds of health services

  • Health Human Resources—Addressing the supply and distribution of health human resources related to specific providers

  • Population Health—Addressing questions related to health promotion and prevention through the social determinants of health
