The Data Users Conference 2008 is pleased to offer the following pre-conference workshops on Sunday, September 21, 2008. The workshops will be available in the morning with a repeat presentation in the afternoon.

*The STC/CIHI Health Indicator Framework – How Data Are Used to Produce Indicators, and Finding What You Need on the Web
Presented by Brenda Wannell, Statistics Canada and Jeremy Herring, Canadian Institute for Health Information

This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn more about the Health Indicator Framework and how many data sources are used to develop indicators — for reporting at the national, provincial and regional level. This will include describing how various rates are calculated, as well as methods used to assign data to relevant variables (geographic or by socio-economic characteristics) using the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF).  Participants will have the opportunity during the workshop to seek out various Health Indicators on the web in order to answer relevant questions and navigate the information available.

*CIHI Portal: Empowering Health Care Organizations Across Canada
Presented by Janine Kaye and Lisa Gordon, Canadian Institute for Health Information

Since the release of CIHI Portal to users in acute care facilities, regional health authorities and ministries of health, users have benefited from access to a powerful analytical tool and facility-identifiable comparative data. CIHI Portal users can also take advantage of opportunities to collaborate with other users across the country to share expertise and analytical methodologies and results. In this workshop you will have a hands-on experience learning how to develop and share comparative reports within CIHI Portal and see the power of communities of practice. Also included in this workshop will be examples of how existing users have benefitted from participating in CIHI Portal.

*HSMR: Linking Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio Data Analysis to Quality Improvement
Presented by Annette Marcuzzi, Canadian Institute for Health Information

The hospital standardized mortality ratio (HSMR) is a big-dot summary measure that is available to hospitals on a regular basis. HSMR can help support efforts to improve quality of care and patient safety in Canadian hospitals. It compares a local mortality rate with the average national experience and allows organizations to track changes over time. This interactive workshop offers an opportunity for participants to learn more about the technical aspects of the measure, its interpretation and some suggestions for further drill-down analysis that can help support organizations in identifying areas for improvement.

Overview of Health Data at Statistics Canada
Presented by SPresented by Vincent Dale, Statistics Canada

This workshop will present health data available from Statistics Canada. In addition to population health surveys, administrative data, record linkage and analytical products will be presented. The ways in which data users can access various sources of data will also be discussed.

Data Mining for Data Quality—How to Assess the Measurement Error of Your Data?
Presented by Chad Gyorfi-Dyke, Heather Richards, Ann Chapman and Mark Majkowski, Canadian Institute for Health Information

This workshop will demonstrate several ways in which data quality issues can be addressed in your organization using these different techniques: data mining; assessing measurement error using quantitative and qualitative methods; and building a repository for consistent data quality documentation.

An Introduction to CMG+: Grouping Methodology and Related Resource Indicators
Presented by Qian Yang and Jean He, Canadian Institute for Health Information

In 2007, CIHI released a brand new grouper, CMG+, for classifying acute inpatient cases. The new CMG+ methodology is based on ICD-10-CA/CCI classification systems and replaced the existing CMG/Plx grouper. This workshop provides an overview of the CMG+ grouping methodology as well as the estimation process of the estimated length of stay/resource intensity weight (ELOS/RIW) resource indicators.

Understanding ICD-10-CA and CCI for Analysis and Trending
Presented by Linda Tournay-Lewis, Canadian Institute for Health Information

This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the health care classification systems used historically and presently, along with some key factors that may influence trending.  The session will take a facilitated approach to work through a case study.

For an ideal learning environment, we have scheduled the workshops to occur in two separate settings located in close proximity to each other (approximately 15 minutes' walking distance).

*These workshops are being offered in a computer lab training facility, to allow for hands-on learning by participants. The training facility, TrainCanada, is located at Delta Office Towers, 350 Sparks Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

All other workshops will be held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

The workshop registration fee covers two workshops – plus coffee/muffins in the morning and at a.m. and p.m. break times. Lunch is not provided.
