The Data Users Conference 2010 is pleased to offer the following workshops sessions on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 7:30 to 8:30 am as part of the conference.

CIHI’s Cost Estimator Tool
Presented by Britta Nielsen, Program Lead, MIS & Costing, Canadian Institute for Health Information

Did you know the in-hospital cost for a patient to undergo a lung transplant is over $92,000 in Canada?   A new publicly available tool on the CIHI website allows users to create average cost estimates at the patient level for specific patient groupings (CMGs).  Behind the scenes, the Patient Cost Estimator uses CIHI’s Resource Intensity Weight (RIW) values at the patient level, along with CIHI’s CPWC at the provincial level to calculate the estimates, providing a powerful tool for CIHI’s stakeholders since 2009.

Ecological Versus Individual-Level Measures: An Exploratory Workshop*
Moderated by: Dr. Cordell Neudorf, Chief Medical Health Officer, Saskatoon Health Region;
Presented by : Denis Hamel, Agent de planification, de programmation et de recherche, Institut national de santé publique du Québec; and Michelle Rotterman, Statistiques Canada

This workshop will provide participants with a better understanding of ecological (or area-based) measures and individual-level measures.  Participants will learn about and discuss each of the two measures, including types of research questions that lend themselves to each level of analyses and instances where using both would be useful or beneficial.

Preference-Based Measures of Health-Related Quality of Life
Presented by David Feeney, Center for Health Research, Northwest, Hawai'i, and Southeast
Kaiser Permanente, Northwest Region and Julie Bernier, Health Analysis Division Statistics Canada

This workshop will review evidence on the measurement properties and applications of preference-based measures that have been widely used in population health surveys in Canada and the United States.  A focus of the Workshop will be guidance on the interpretation of utility scores. Major multi-attribute utility measures will include the EQ-5D, Health Utilities Index (HUI), and Short-Form 6D (based on SF-36).  The Workshop will include hands-on experience in the direct elicitation of preference scores for a health state, the completion of questionnaires from several instruments (EQ-5D, HUI2 and HUI3, SF-6D), and the analysis and interpretation of the results.
The interpretation of scores will be considered in the context of comparing groups at a point in time as well as comparing within-person change over time. Applications will be drawn from diverse clinical and population health applications including osteoarthritis of the knee, multiple sclerosis, total hip arthroplasty, lung transplantation, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, hip fracture, data from population health surveys, and the estimation of health-adjusted life expectancy.

Overview of CIHI’s Databases and Ways to Access
Nicole de Guia, Senior Consultant, Special Projects, Continuing and Specialized Care Information Services (CSCIS) and Jacqueline Kurji, Senior Coordinator, Canadian Institute for Health Information

CIHI manages a wide range of databases covering health spending, the health workforce, health services, and pharmaceuticals. This workshop will provide a brief overview of these sources of data and will explain the various ways in which analysts, researchers, and other users can access this information.

Improving Primary Health Care Information in Canada: Supporting Quality of Care, Research and Decision-Making
Presented by Patricia Sullivan-Taylor, Manager, Primary Health Care, Canadian Institute for Health Information

Attendees will understand how the Primary Health Care Information program at CIHI collaborates with stakeholders across Canada to address priority information needs that support pan-Canadian data and information standards, enhance existing and emerging data sources to improve access to comprehensive pan-Canadian primary health care data, and learn about the results from our recent analyses.

Health Data in Action: Perspectives from the Field
Moderated by:  Jeff Moon, Head, MADGIC (Maps, Data & Government Information), Queen's University Library. Presented by:  Gary Catlin, Director General, Health, Justice and Special Surveys Branch, Statistics Canada, and Dr. Terrance Wade, Associate Professor, Department of Community Health Sciences, Brock University.

This panel session will bring together a major health data producer and an academic researcher to discuss the role of health data in research, teaching and policy-making. This producer–researcher pairing will raise some unique perspectives but will also identify common ground—particularly around the issue of improving access to health data.
